Beginning of the Arboretum

The Maine Forest Service (Department of Conservation) began development of the Pine Tree State Arboretum in 1981 with funding from federal urban forestry grants.  During that year, 120 trees of various species were planted, and construction of fences, bridges, trails, and a boardwalk began.

Trail_InfoIn 1982, a private, not-for-profit corporation was formed to manage the 224 acre area that was becoming the Arboretum.  In the period from 1982 to 1990, additional trails, fences, and bridges were constructed, an increasing number of educational programs and tours were conducted, and over 180 additional trees of many species were planted.

In 1990, the Viles Visitors Center was completed and an executive director was hired.  In 1992, a 99 year lease was signed with the Department of Conservation, administered by the Bureau of Parks and Lands. Since 1982, the Arboretum has been managed by a Board of Directors and an Advisory Board.

In June of 1991, the Arboretum was certified as a Tree Farm Demonstration Area. The Hosta Collection was brought to Maine from Massachusetts when the Arnold Arboretum sold the Case Estates in 1992. The Arboretum is continuously adding to its educational activities, its trail system and its collection of trees and plants.

Current ongoing activities at the Arboretum include the development of the Outdoor Education Center, revision of the Master Plan, preparation of a 5 year Strategic Plan, field trips, tours, educational programs, tree planting, rock garden development, University of Maine research, a cross-country skiing program, meeting room rentals, and maintenance of the grounds. Many volunteers generously contribute time to all aspects of the Arboretum.
