Why Become a Member?

Tree PlantingThe Arboretum is an independent, non profit 501 c(3) corporation. Membership dues are considered charitable donations and are tax deductible. They are the major source of income for the Arboretum.

Membership donations are stretched a long way at the Arboretum. There is a small staff that consists of an Executive Director, a part time Education Director, a part time maintenance worker and a Community Forestry Specialist who helps the Maine Forest Service administer Project Canopy.

All the trail work, plant care, and educational programs are carried out by volunteers under the guidance of the staff. Membership donations also serve as "cost share match" when the Arboretum applies for grants - thus often doubling the value of each individual membership donation.

The Arboretum is not a state agency. Though located on land owned by the State of Maine, the Arboretum  receives no direct funding from the state. The land is leased from the state and all the funds necessary for maintenance, development, planting and education are raised by the Arboretum through memberships, donations, grants and the rental of its facilities.
